Doing Good Close to Home
Row-by-Row grows and researches vegetables at the site of Leelanau County’s original “Poor Farm”.

The Poor Farm garden comes to us through partnership with County government and the Leelanau County Historical Preservation Society. Maintenance is provided by a fine group of volunteers, and seedling propagation is by Glen Lake School students in the school green house. The students have produced over 75,000 seedlings in the last 10 years.
Weekly distribution to food pantries and shelters is provided by Northern Michigan Food Rescue.
Most materials in the garden are made from recycled products whose original purpose was certainly not gardening!. Our informal motto has long been, ‘free or less”. We have long sought- as both Buckets of Rain and Row by Row- to develop techniques of food production using only materials that are culturally accessible and appropriate to the communities we serve.
